Biography 〰️

James Bowen

Entering Towson University in 2021, I initially had my sights set on an English degree, following my love of writing and creating. During my second semester of freshman year however, I took a gender in film and media class which immediately opened my eyes to the world of film studies. Excited to dive in, I switched to a double major: English and Film. This was later refined to a major in Film and minor in English, not because my love of literature diminished, but rather because my love of film flourished beyond it’s reach. I simply had too many classes I wanted to take and not enough time.

Diving right into film I tried to be either on set or working on a production in some way or another at all times. Making my own short films and helping other’s productions helped fill that goal. My college education culminated with my senior thesis: Something Unforgivable, a psychedelic horror short film made under the guidance of Professor Joseph Kraemer. I gathered all the friends, contacts, and money I made at college to make a film very close to my heart all about anger, consequences, and how reprehensible it is to talk in a movie theater. As I write this on 8/25/2025, the film is done and I’m shopping it at different film festivals, to get an online release when its run ends.

Now, post-grad, I spend my time writing spec scripts and filming extremely low-budget short films with my limited equipment. I hope to one day write and direct honest to god movies with red carpet premieres and budgets bigger than 4-digits. Working with people, from PA’s to actors, it’s the lifeblood of movie making and some of my favorite days I’ve lived have been on set, putting out fires and rallying the troops. I love making art and I hope that what I make can touch or inspire even just one person. If that happens, I’ll know I’ve made it.
